Narrabeen Sports High

Narrabeen Sports High is a NSW Government, Co-educational Secondary school incorporating a specialist sports training program for elite athletes.

The NSW Government established five such schools with targeted sports programs to ensure that elite teenage athletes could continue with training and competition without compromising their education. While the school is focused on maximising the academic success of all students, it has a better understanding of the demands of sports training and has developed a flexiblity with regard to assessments that is particularly helpful to young athletes.

Students in the targeted sports program make up currently one third of Narrabeen Sports High's enrolment. Two thirds of our students are local and out-of-area students who enjoy our exceptional facilities and whose parents have confidence in the policies and programs at their local comprehensive co-educational high school. The Director General's School Achievement Award for Excellence and Quality Assurance Report have been measures of our successes.

The school was selected to be developed as a Sports High School partly because it had demonstrated its potential in the area of sports. The school had been Champion Sports School in 1988 and 1990 - long before it became a Sports High School.

The Targeted Sports Program has been designed for the highly talented sports person and entry is by way of competitive selection trials. Students selected into this program have access to specialised coaching and training and accredited course of study. The school has been fortunate in establishing strong and supportive official links with the Sydney Academy of Sport, the University of New South Wales (Sydney) and with State Associations of the sports in the program.

As a Sports High School all students benefit from the expertise of the sports staff, the outstanding sporting facilities and the overall general interest in sport at the school. All students may try out for any of the many school teams and on sports days all students participate together.

We believe that through a well planned and coordinated development as a sport high school we have been able to evolve into a school which provides an excellent sports education and training option for outstanding athletes. More importantly we continue to be an excellent comprehensive co-educational high school, one that is now attracting students from beyond our local area.
